Direct written premiums totaled close to $214 billion for the top 25 private passenger auto — also known as personal auto — carriers an increase from last year's $199.5 billion.

The top 10 carriers accounted for 72 percent of the total direct premiums written. The top five carriers pulled the most weight in the commercial auto insurance industry, accounting for 55 percent of the direct premiums written.

The companies in the top five spots remained the same as they were in 2015.

In 2015, Liberty Mutual Insurance and Farmers Insurance were ranked at 6 and 7, respectively. In 2016, the two have flipped positions in the top 10.
