(Bloomberg) -- Reports of drones violating safety standards in the U.S.continued to climb last year, rising by 46 percent over the sameperiod a year earlier.

There were 1,274 sightings of drones flying too close to otheraircraft, people and buildings reported to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) fromFebruary through September last year, the agency said in an emailedstatement. That was 400 more incidents than the same period in2015.

No aircraft collisions verified


While the reports contained several claims that drones had hittraditional aircraft, the FAA wasn’t able to verify any collisions.Every investigation so far has found the collisions involved birdsor other items, the agency said.

“Safely integrating unmanned aircraft into the national airspacesystem is one of the FAA’s top priorities, and the agency wants tosend a clear message that operating drones around airplanes andhelicopters is dangerous and illegal,” the agency said in therelease. “Unauthorized operators may be subject to stiff fines andcriminal charges, including possible jail time.”
