The National Association of InsuranceCommissioners has hired Michael Consedine, a former Pennsylvaniainsurance commissioner, to be its next chief executive officer.
|The Kansas City, Missouri-based insurance regulator group saysConsedine will take over as CEO in early 2017. He will work in theNAIC's Washington office.
|Consedine is on track to succeed Andy Beal, the actingCEO. Ben Nelson, a Democrat who represented Nebraskain the Senate from 2001 through 2013, was the NAIC's last permanentCEO. Nelson stepped down from that post in early 2015.
|Consedine has been the head of government affairs atTransamerica, a large, U.S.-based arm of Aegon N.V., since February2015. He took charge of Aegon's global government and policyaffairs operation in August. Aegon has its headquarters in theHague, Netherlands. The company has some operations in the UnitedKingdom, and that has given the company a stake in the UnitedKingdom effort to leave the European Union.

|Consedine earned a bachelor's degree in political science andjournalism from James Madison University in 1991, and he earned alaw degree from Widener University in 1994.
|Consedine worked as a department counsel in the PennsylvaniaDepartment of Insurance from 1995 through 1999, then spent 12 yearsas a partner and vice chair of the insurance practice group in thePhiladelphia office of Saul Ewing LLP.
|Former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett, a Republican, namedConsedine insurance commissioner in 2011. Consedine served ascommissioner until January 2015, when Tom Wolf, a Democrat, becamegovernor.
|While Consedine was an insurance commissioner, he served in theNAIC as secretary/treasurer, vice president andpresident-elect.
|The NAIC has a friendly rivalry with the Manasquan, NewJersey-based National Conference of Insurance Legislators, agroup for state lawmakers with an interest in insurance. The chiefexecutive officer of NCOIL is Thomas Considine, a former New Jerseyinsurance commissioner.
|Genealogists believe that most members of the Considine and Consedine families aredescended from Ireland's Mac Consaidin family. Michael Consedine andThomas Considine are not aware of any recent family connections,according to an NCOIL representative.
