(Bloomberg) -- The FBI has taken overthe probe into a deadly plane crash near the Hartford-Brainard Airport in Connecticut afterinvestigators determined it appeared to be deliberate, rather thanthe result of an accident.

The NationalTransportation Safety Board said in a statement Wednesday thatits “initial investigation of Tuesday’s aircraft crash in EastHartford, Connecticut, indicates the crash is the result of anintentional act.” The NTSB hands oversight of crash investigationsover to the FBI when there is a possible criminal or terrorist actinvolved.

One person aboard the Piper PA-34 Seneca was killed in theTuesday crash on a main thoroughfare in East Hartford. Authoritieshave interviewed a survivor, police Lieutenant Joshua Litwin toldreporters Wednesday. Photos published by the Hartford Courant andlocal television stations showed the plane’s wreckage burning inthe street.

Student pilot and flight instructor were arguing


A student pilot and a flight instructor were arguing on the planeshortly before it crashed, the Hartford Courantreported, citing an unnamed law enforcement official. Thestudent told the instructor he didn’t want to fly the plane anylonger, according to the newspaper. The instructor survived thecrash, according to the report.

Planes the size of the Piper typically don’t have crash-proofblack box recorders, but investigators can often retrieve dataafter an accident from other electronic components.

Litwin said the FBI was initially contacted to join theinvestigation “by virtue of the infrastructure surrounding thearea," without giving more details.
