Cyber attacks continue to dominate the headlines with theDemocratic National Committee as the most recent high-profilevictim.

As the hackers get bolder, companies of all sizes and in allindustries are looking to improve their cybersecurity. Thistranslates into high demand for cybersecurity professionals,according to a recent analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statisticsdata by Stanford University, which projects demand togrow by 53 percent through 2018.

Job-search site Indeed notes that companies don't have enoughIT staff with cybersecurity experience to provide the protectionthe companies say they need. As insurers and underwriters assess acompany's risk profile, the lack of qualified personnel to managecybersecurity could have an impact on rates, policy provisions andcoverage.

In determining its list of where the best-paying cybersecurityjobs are, Indeed used the title of “information securityspecialist,” which includes responsibilities for design,implementation, monitoring and testing of different types of cyberdefense. If you're thinking of applying for one of these jobs, beaware that employers are looking for certifications as well skillsand experience.

Total cost-of-living calculations

When you add high demand with low supply, skilled andexperienced cybersecurity professionals can command high salaries.But, as with most job categories, salaries vary across the UnitedStates, based on the cost of living in a particular location, amongother factors. Indeed also noted that the titles of jobs can varyby industry and location as well.

And the salaries themselves don't tell the whole story. Theprice of rent, tax, food, transportation and education all have abig effect on take-home pay, and those costs can vary widely acrossthe country.
