Insurance InformationInstitute President Robert Hartwig is leaving the New YorkCity-based organization to join the faculty of the University ofSouth Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business, the I.I.I.announced today.

Hartwig became president of the I.I.I. in 2007.

“My decision to leave the institute was an extremely difficultone. I love this job, this industry and the daily thrill andprivilege of working with amazing people both at the organizationitself and throughout the I.I.I.’s membership,” Hartwig said in theannouncement. “At the same time, I have throughout my 23-yearcareer in the insurance world always maintained strong ties to theacademic community. After 18 years at the institute, now is theright time for me — both personally and professionally — to make achange. I am truly looking forward to my next important role —attracting and educating young talent to thisvitally important industry.”

Robert HartwigHartwig wasI.I.I.’s chief economist before becoming its president. Beforejoining the institute, he held a number of key roles at Swiss Re,the National Council on Compensation Insurance and the U.S.Consumer Product Safety Commission.

He will become a faculty member in the University of SouthCarolina’s Finance Department in August. The department is part ofthe Columbia, S.C.-based university’s Darla Moore School ofBusiness. The University of South Carolina has one of largestundergraduate risk management and insurance programs in the UnitedStates.

Hartwig will teach courses in risk management, insurance andcorporate finance, including courses in the MBA program. He willalso become co-director of the Moore School’s Risk and Uncertainty ManagementCenter.

Hartwig received his Ph.D. and Master of Science degrees ineconomics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“Bob Hartwig has done an extraordinary job as president of theI.I.I., and finding a successor to fill his shoes will be adaunting task,” said Bruce Kelley, president and chief executiveofficer of EMC Insurance Cos. in Des Moines, Iowa, and chairman ofthe I.I.I.’s board of directors. “Under Dr. Hartwig’s leadership,the I.I.I. bolstered its position as a thought leader in theindustry and expanded dramatically the audiences who have access tothe I.I.I.’s award-winning editorial content, data and subjectmatter expertise. More than ever before, the I.I.I. is excelling inits mission to improve the understanding of insurance — what itdoes and how it works.”

Members of the I.I.I.’s board will serve as part of a searchcommittee to find the I.I.I.’s next president, Kelley said.
