We've all seen someone driving down the road distracted by theircell phone, food, or a GPS device. However, a recent survey of U.S.drivers reveals even more outlandish behavior happening behind the wheel.

In an effort to discourage distracteddriving in conjunction with National Distracted DrivingAwareness Month in April, Harris Poll, on behalf of Erie Insurance, conducted an online survey in Februaryof 1,915 U.S. drivers aged 18 and older asking what they do behindthe wheel.

Besides the obvious phone distractions of texting and talking, people admitted to other distractions, including:

  • taking selfies
  • daydreaming
  • applying makeup
  • styling hair
  • reading
  • changing clothes
  • singing and dancing
  • romantic encounter/PDA
  • brushing/flossing teeth
  • changing drivers
  • putting in contact lenses or eye drops
  • curling eyelashes
  • going to the bathroom
  • scratching off lottery tickets
  • playing the guitar

The Erie Insurance infographic on the next page, "Eyes on the Road, Hands on the Wheel," breaksdown the numbers and provides additional insights into distracteddriving, including the fact that 42% of the survey respondentsadmitted to engaging in distracted behaviors, but 20% say theynever do so when passengers are in the car.
