It's true, the Midwest really is safer for drivers than thecoasts.

According to Allstate's 10th annual "Allstate America's BestDrivers Report," released Monday, six of the top 10 safest citiesfor drivers -- according to the insurer's own claims data -- are inso-called "flyover country." Only one of the metro areas, the townof Visalia, Calif., even comes close to coastal, and it islocated more than 200 miles inland.

"A big part of our job at Allstate is to help our customersprevent bad things from happening," said Mike Roche, Allstate'sexecutive vice president of claims. "With that in mind, ouractuaries reviewed millions of records to develop this year'sreport which presents new data to equip them with better drivingawareness tools. Allstate is showing drivers that factors likepopulation, a city's density and precipitation may contribute totheir driving safety to reveal important lessons on the road."

As a Colorado resident, I am especially proud to report that thenearby college of town of Fort Collins, Colo. has been named"America's Safest Driving City" for the fourth time by Allstate. This doesn't exactly come as a surprise, as the city has been inthe top 10 every year since the report's inception, but it is stillimpressive nonetheless. According to Allstate, the averagedriver in Fort Collins will experience an auto collision every 14.2years, which is 29.6% less likely than the national average ofevery 10 years.
