Hondas continued to be in demand among thieves, but overall,2013 appears to a light year for vehicles thefts, relativelyspeaking, of course.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau says, in releasing itslatest “Hot Wheels” auto-theft report, “After a slight increase in2012, the FBI predicts a reduction in national vehicle thefts of3.2%.”

Furthermore, the NICB says that if the FBI's preliminary numbershold, thefts will be under 700,000 for 2013, “a number not seensince 1967 and a reduction in vehicle thefts of over 50% since1991,” which was the peak year for thefts.

NICB President and CEO Jon Wehrle says in a statement, “Weapplaud the vehicle manufacturers for their efforts to improveanti-theft technology and pledge to continue to work with ourinsurance-company members and law enforcement to identify and seekvigorous prosecution of the organized criminal rings responsiblefor so many of these thefts.”

However, despite new anti-theft technologies and betterpolicing, the theft rate, while lower, is still staggeringly high.“The drop in thefts is good news for all of us. But it stillamounts to a vehicle being stolen every 45 seconds and losses ofover $4 billion a year,” says Wehrle.
