AT&T has confirmed that user Social Security numbers andcall records were compromised in a data breach in April, reports CBS.
|In a statement, AT&T says three employees of one of itsvendors accessed customer accounts without proper authorizationbetween April 9 and 21. AT&T believes the employees wereattempting to hack request codes that can unlock AT&T phones,and in the process accessed users' Social Security numbers,birthdates, and private account information, says CBS.
|It is unknown how many users are affected. AT&T is offeringa year of free credit monitoring to those affected, although thecompany didn't specifiy whether credit card information had alsobeen accessed.
|AT&T is the latest company to report it has been struck witha data breach. On Friday, restaurant chain P.F. Chang's announced user credit cardinformation was stolen from some of its restaurants. AT&T andP.F. Chang's join Target Corp. and Neiman Marcus Group Ltd. inbeing hit by hackers in attacks that have exposed the data of alarge number of customers.
