Having joined Markel Corp. when the specialty insurer bought Alterra Capital Holdings, Bryan Sanders has been appointed president of Markel Wholesale.
Sanders will take over the role on Dec. 31 from John Latham, a former president of the National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices, who is stepping down from Markel, the company says.
Latham will maintain a relationship with Markel, as a consultant.

Sanders is currently executive vice president of Markel's wholesale division.

Sanders has 32 years of insurance industry experience with Alterra Specialty, Mx Specialty, Hilb Rogal and Hobbs and McDuff Underwriters. He began his career as an underwriter for Aetna Casualty and Surety Co. in 1981.

Richmond, Va.-based Markel Corp. completed its $3 billion buy of Alterra Capital in April and has added two new business units: Markel Global Reinsurance and Markel Global Insurance.
