Concussions in youth football and other contact sports and activities, including cheerleading and gymnastics, are a top concern for K&K Insurance Group Inc., says Lorena Hatfield, Marketing Resources Manager for this Aon subsidiary.

However, she adds, overall injury claims are rising in cheerleading, gymnastics, dance and martial arts, where open practice sessions or private parties can involve non-member participants who may not be familiar with the sport, its equipment or its safety rules.

The company is also monitoring gym-equipment mishaps: "We're seeing some fitness-related claims from the use of equipment that's not designed for fitness training—ropes, tires, ladders, etc.—sometimes used in extreme fitness classes," says Hatfield. "We're also watching the growing popularity of trampoline facilities."
