A large storm system brought a variety of weather conditionsacross the United States this week, killing at least three peopleand injuring dozens of others, Aon Benfield's Impact Forecastingreports.

Wind damage began in western states on Sunday and Monday, andthe system then shifted eastward and brought blizzard conditionsand severe weather to the Plains, Midwest and Gulf Coast throughFriday. Aon Benfield says the Storm Prediction Center recorded atleast 744 storm reports – including 23 reports of tornadoes, 347reports of hail and 374 reports of damaging winds during theweek.

State Farm spokesman Gary Stephensen says the damage in Arkansasas of April 11 was “primarily in very rural areas, although acouple of small communities were hit by what was probably an F1(not confirmed) tornado.”

He continues, “Thankfully, no population concentrations wereimpacted, although, certainly several families did suffer a severeimpact.”

Aon Benfield reports that at least two tornadoes touched down inArkansas, including an EF-1 tornado which destroyed a barn in StoneCounty. A second, and stronger, EF-2 tornado damaged or destroyedat least 41 homes in Van Buren County.

The most significant tornado was recorded in the greater St.Louis, Mo. metropolitan region, Aon Benfield says: an EF-2 twisterwith estimated winds of 115 to 125 mph.

By Thursday, Aon Benfield says additional severe weather wasrecorded throughout the Southeast, with multiple tornadoes touchingdown in Louisiana and Mississippi. There was one tornado-relatedfatality in Kemper, Miss. Aon Benfield says baseball-sized hailfell near Rockmart, Georgia, while multiple reports of tree andbuilding damage occurred from winds in Huntsville, Alabama.Gulfport, Mississippi also reported large trees downed due to highwinds.

Reports indicated that thousands of insurance claims havealready been filed across the West, Plains, Midwest, Southeast, andMid-Atlantic, says Aon Benfield, adding that while it is too earlyto project a specific loss figure, it is anticipated that insuredlosses will exceed the $100 million threshold.

Earlier in the week, the storm brought an odd mix of weather tostates further west. Aon Benfield says that, in a rare occurrence,hail was falling in locations where it was also snowing inNebraska. Thunderstorms producing freezing rain moved into easternWisconsin overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday morning, coatingtrees and power lines in heavy ice, and numerous communities fromLa Crosse to Green Bay reported power outages and downed treelimbs.
