When Jacoby Jones of the BaltimoreRavens returned the second-half kickoff 108 yards inSuper Bowl XLVII, some lucky shoppers earned a full cashrebate on purchases made before the National Football League'schampionship game.

And retail campaign insurer SCA Promotions will be footingthe bill—totaling about $290,000.

Leading up to the Super Bowl retailers across the U.S.worked with SCA Promotions to run rebate contests giving awayprizes if, for example, a touchdown occurred from a kickoffreturn. When Jones fielded the second-half kickoff 8yards deep in the endzone and bolted practically untouched 108yards for a score, Dallas-based SCA got out itscheckbook.

The company says it has covered billions of dollars in prizecoverage during its 26 years of operation, and paid out more than$176 million in cash and prizes for sales and consumer productpromotions, jackpots and contests.

“Conditional rebate promotions motivate customers to make apurchase because they know there is a chance to win their moneyback if a specific sports or weather event occurs,” says ChrisHamman, vice president of SCA Promotions, in a statement.“Businesses can offer incredible prizes without the worry andfinancial risk of rebating all their customer's purchases. Thesepromotions not only absolve them of the financial risk but alsogenerate incredible media coverage.”

SCA Promotions cut Furniture Mart in Fort Morgan, Colo. a checkfor more than $122,000 for its refund of all home items purchasedbetween Jan. 25-26. Furniture Mart had bet on the openingkickoff/touchdown return.

More than $100,000 in television purchases are being rebated forNew Mexico-based appliance store Baillio. Other promotional payoffsinclude $50,000 to a radio station, $100,000 to the Rose HavenCivic Association and $10,000 to Club O in Harvey, Ill.
