West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has appointed Michael D.Riley acting insurance commissioner of the state Offices of theInsurance Commission.

Tomblin replaces Jane L. Cline, who in May announced her retirement effectiveJune 30. Cline has been chief of insurance in the state since2001.

Tomblin started with the state insurance commission in 2001 asan administrative services manager and has since become theassistant commissioner of regulation. He was a project manager asthe state privatized its workers' compensation system, says a statementfrom Riley.

"I am confident that Mike's knowledge and experience gatheredover the course of his almost 10 years at the Offices of InsuranceCommission, coupled with Jane's legacy of thoughtful leadershipskills, makes him well-suited to lead the agency and take on thecontinuing challenges that face the insurance commission," Rileysays.

Riley has a master's degree in business administration and anundergraduate degree in finance, both from MarshalUniversity.
