Florida's public insurance carrier says someone fraudulentlychanged its address through the U.S. Postal Service.

Citizens Property Insurance Corp. is trying to warn roughly 1million policyholders and new applicants that checks andcorrespondence from June 14 to June 28 may not have been received.Even worse, it worries the information could be used for identitytheft.

It didn't learn about the fraud until early last week, afterreceiving a change-of-address confirmation from the Postal Service.Mail sent to Citizens' Jacksonville headquarters was wronglydiverted, but the insurer caught the fraud before the a secondrequest to change its P.O. Box was processed.

Citizens has issued a set of FAQs (below) regarding thediversion:

Fraudulent Changes to Citizens Mailing AddressQ: I understand some mail addressed to Citizens wasforwarded to another address by the US PostalService. What period of time did this occur and which mailingaddresses were affected? A: The US PostalService has advised that some mail addressed to Citizens may havebeen fraudulently redirected to an unauthorized location on orabout June 24, 2010 through June 29, 2010. The address affected is:6676 Corporate Center Parkway Jacksonville, FL 32216 Q: Howcan I find out if my mail to Citizens was received?A: Please contact our Customer Care Center at888.685.1555 for confirmation. Should you reach us after hours,please leave a voicemail with your name, policy number, a returntelephone number and the best time to contact you. Q: Whatshould I do if my check payable to Citizens was cashed by someoneother than Citizens? A: Obtain a copy ofthe front and back of the cancelled check and contact the CustomerCare Center at 888.685.1555. Q: If Citizens has notreceived my check, should I place a stop payment on thecheck? A: If your payment to Citizens wasmailed from June 14 through June 28 and has not been cashed, pleasecall Citizens Customer Care at 888.685.1555. We'll confirm whetherwe received it and then discuss options. Q: Does Citizensaccept payment by phone? A: Not at thistime. Citizens only accepts personal or cashiers checks by mail.Residential customers (with policy numbers that begin with FRJ) nowhave the option of making electronic payments online. To use thisoption, register for Manage myPolicy, Citizens' onlineservice that provides policyholders access to policy details,billing information and online payments. Q: Will Citizensreimburse my stop payment fee? A: Shoulda stop payment be necessary, Citizens will reimburse this fee uponreceipt of the appropriate documentation. Q: What if themailing error generates a notice of cancellation for mypolicy? A: Please contact our CustomerCare Center at 888.685.1555 for assistance. Q: How can Iprotect myself from identity theft? If you believe thatyou may have been the victim of identity theft as a result of thisfraudulent mail diversion,we recommend that you contact yourfinancial institutions, credit card issuers, credit bureaus andother similar entities to advise them of this incident and verifythat your account information, status, and transactions arecorrect. We recommend that you immediately obtain a current copy ofyour credit report and review it for suspicious activity.
