A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck near the Ontario-Quebec borderregion in Canada, about 33 miles north/northeast of Ottawa,according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake struck at 1:41 p.m. today, and news reports indicatethat there is no reported serious damage, and that shaking was feltas far south as central New York.

According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred in the WesternQuebec seismic zone. Earthquakes cause damage in the zone aboutonce a decade, USGS said, with smaller earthquakes felt three orfour times a year. The two largest damaging earthquakes in the zonewere a magnitude 6.1 quake in 1935 and a magnitude 6.2 quake in1732, which caused significant damage in Montreal.
