Marsh & McLennan Companies Inc. in New York said formerCIGNA Corp. chief executive H. Edward Hanway has been elected toits board of directors.

Mr. Hanway, 57, served as chairman and chief executive officerof CIGNA from 2000 to the end of 2009. From 1999 to 2000, he servedas president and chief operating officer. He was president of CIGNAHealthCare from 1996 to 1999, and from 1989 to 1996 was presidentof CIGNA International.

"We are delighted that Ed is joining us," said Stephen R.Hardis, MMC's chairman of the board. "His extensive insuranceindustry experience--as well as his significant efforts to improvethe quality, accessibility and affordability of health care in theUnited States--make Ed an exceptional addition to the board."

The MMC board has determined that Mr. Hanway is independent frommanagement under MMC's director independence standards, as well asfor the purpose of New York Stock Exchange listed companystandards.

He will serve on the board's audit and corporate responsibilitycommittees.

With this election, MMC said its board now consists of 12members, including 11 independent directors.

MMC is the parent company of insurance broker Marsh andreinsurance broker Guy Carpenter.
