Americans will spend more on consumer electronics this holidayseason, both for themselves and as gifts, according to the ConsumerElectronics Assn. (CEA).

The trade group reported 80 percent of adults plan to buy aconsumer electronics product during the holidays, the highest inthe annual survey's 16-year history. Holiday shoppers will spend anaverage of $222 on consumer electronics purchases, up 8 percentfrom last year.

“Consumers remain wary, but there are signs of optimism in ourholiday forecast,” said Shawn DuBravac, CEA's chief economist anddirector of research. “As the holiday approaches, consumer appetitefor technology highlights the resiliency of the tech sector.”

Nearly half of those surveyed plan to buy themselves a consumerelectronics product this year.

Electronics devices showing up on the Top 10 list for the firsttime this year include Blue-Ray players, eReaders and netbooks.

“Retailers who dedicate shelf space to new technologies, likeeReaders, will likely be rewarded with stronger foot traffic,” saidSteve Koenig, CEA industry analysis director.
