The 2009 Atlantic tropical season will bring 13 named storms, 7hurricanes and 3 Category 3 or higher hurricanes, according to WSICorp., a Massachusetts-based provider of weather-driven businesssolutions.

|

These forecast numbers are higher than the 1950-2008 averages of9.8 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 2.5 intense hurricanes. Thisprediction stems from the expected continuation ofwarmer-than-normal Atlantic Ocean temperatures in summer and fall, and the likelihood of a favorable wind shear environment from thelack of an El Nino event.
The Atlantic temperatures are cooler than last year, and WSI doesnot expect 2009 to be as active as 2008.
