FEMA and President Bush have been responding to the disastercaused by TS Fay as insurers begin to release their claim figuresfrom the record setting tropical storm.

FEMA is reporting that federal disaster aid has been madeavailable for Florida to supplement state and local recoveryefforts in the area struck by Tropical Storm Fay beginning onAugust 18, 2008, and continuing.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator DavidPaulison said federal funding is available to state and eligiblelocal governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on acost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacementof facilities damaged by Tropical Storm Fay in the counties ofBrevard, Monroe, Okeechobee, and St. Lucie. Federal funding is alsoavailable on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measuresstatewide.

According to the Associated Press, Fay had a record fourlandfalls in Florida last week, and thousands of homes andbusinesses were inundated with flood waters this week as the stormworked its way north from the Florida Keys and zigzagged across thepeninsula. At least 12 deaths in the U.S. have been blamed on thestorm.
