The National Insurance Crime Bureau has released its annual "Hot Spots" report on auto theft rates, and as usual, the 10 most auto-theft plagued areas in the nation all lie west of the Mississippi.
Modesto, Calif., which ranked as the city with the most auto thefts per capita in 2003-05, returned to its customary spot atop the list after dropping to number five last year. In fact, California cities nearly monopolized the top half of the list, with San Diego/Carlsbad/San Marcos, Stockton, and San Francisco/Oakland/Fremont respectively clocking in at the three, four, and five spots. Las Vegas/Paradise, Nev., last year's number one "hot spot," was the only non-Californian city in the top five.
The only other state with multiple cities in the top 10 was Arizona, with Phoenix/Mesa/Scottsdale at number eight and Tucson at number 10.
