A Rochester, New York man falsely reported his car stolen beforereporting to federal prison to serve a sentence for a previousfirearms conviction. Khaleef Ahmad Reed intended to collect a$9,300 insurance settlement to pay off his car loan.

According to the New York State Insurance Department, Reed hidthe car inside a relative's garage before telling police that ithad been stolen while parked on the street. Reed then filed aninsurance claim and gave the only key to the car to his insurancecompany.

Insurance Frauds Bureau investigator Gary Sullivan reported thatthe scheme came to light when the relative purchased a new car andwanted to use the garage. Unaware of the stolen car report, therelative had police remove Reed's car, after Reed's girlfriendrefused. The car was then linked to the stolen car report.

Reed faces two-to-four years in state prison after pleadingguilty to grand larceny and is being held without bail. Reed'sgirlfriend pleaded guilty to misdemeanor petty larceny in Augustand is awaiting sentencing.
