Sheboygan, Wis.-based insurer Acuity, which offers flexible worktime arrangements to its workers, has been named one of the BestEmployers for Workers Over 50 by the American Association ofRetired Persons.

It was the second year that the carrier, which offers commercialand personal lines coverage, has been recognized by AARP, Acuitynoted.

This year the firm's Best Employer ranking rose to 16th in thenation, up from 37 last year. The insurer employs 850 persons.

Employers who are nominated for the AARP's award are evaluatedfor their recruiting practices, workplace culture, continuedopportunities, employee benefits, and retiree benefits.

According to Deborah Russell, AARP workforce issues director,Acuity's sensitivity to the needs of older workers is a key reasonthe insurer was ranked among the top 20 employers nationwide. “Witha growing number of mature workers wanting flexible workarrangements, Acuity meets those needs by offering alternative workarrangements,” Ms. Russell noted.

She added that this flexibility also benefits younger workerswho are caregivers for aging family members. “Balancing work andfamily obligations and caring for aging parents is difficult.Acuity recognizes the needs of caregivers which makes them anattractive employer for all workers,” she said.

“Acuity is committed to providing a great workplace for all ouremployees, whether they're 25 or 65,” said John Signer, Acuityhuman resources vice president.

Mr. Signer said that being a Best Employer for Workers Over 50is also significant because of the changing nature of theworkforce. “People over age 50 are a growing percentage of totalemployees nationwide,” he noted.

“Also, we know that experienced employees have a lot to offer toboth our agents and our own business. Therefore, being a greatplace to work, for as long as people want to work is crucial,” headded.

Acuity operates in 16 states, writes over $800 million inpremium through 800 independent agencies, and manages $2 billion inassets.

The firm notes that it is the only company in the nation to benamed four consecutive years to the Great Place to Work Institute'stop five mid-sized companies.
