Claims News Service, July 6, 9:49 a.m. EDT — ICAT Specialty Insurance Company, a company that supplies commercial and residential catastrophe insurance, now is offering residential hurricane insurance for dwellings, apartments, town homes, and condominiums in Hawaii.

The policy provides named-hurricane coverage for policyholders with values up to $2.5 million with several different deductible options. According to a company press release, premium discounts are offered for properties equipped with hurricane connectors, hurricane storm shutters and other windstorm protective devices.

Catastrophe adjusters should not book their plane tickets just yet, however. Hawaii typically has been spared from major hurricane activity due to many factors, including the presence of cooler waters than those found in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. In fact, only two recorded hurricanes have ever made landfall in the state: Hurricane Dot in 1959 and Hurricane Iniki in 1992. Both storms caused extensive damage and had wind speeds recorded in the range of 150 mph.
