Risk managers are "a lot like baseball players," the field's top recruiter suggests. If you can hit for both power and average, steal bases, and flash a gold glove–in other words, keep the cost of risk down, overcome the most challenging exposures, and employ advanced risk management tools and alternative markets–"you are that much more attractive as a free agent," according to Bill Perry, president of New York-based Logic Associates.

"It's the same dynamic in risk management as in any other profession," he said. "The more you can do, the more you know, the more diverse your experience, the wider your skill set, the tougher the field you work in, the more valuable you'll be on the open market."

Switching fields (so to speak), in the wildly popular talent show "American Idol," the judges emphasize that picking the correct song to show off your vocal abilities is critical to getting their approval and the fans' votes.
