Few milestones are as rewarding (and scary) as buying a first home.

But the joy that accompanies housewarming festivities can quickly dissolve into stress and anxiety once a property begins to reveal itself to the homeowner via drafty windows, leaky pipes or any number of other home maintenance challenges.

The good news is that many of these challenges can be nipped in the bud with a handful of seasonal updates. Another great reason to periodically investigate and remedy worn-out features and systems: Any serious damage to the home for which the cause is deemed to be "wear and tear" will not be covered by the home insurance policy.

First-time homeowners can breathe a sigh of relief as there's no shortage of tips and resources to help navigate their property. Among those resources are home improvement publications such as Family Handyman, a DIY magazine under the Reader's Digest umbrella that includes articles, repair guides, tool reviews and more tips and tricks for do-it-yourselfers.
