The race for Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner is heating up in the wake of destructive wildfires that charred a swath of the Peach State less than a month ago.

Wildfires during April 2026 were among the most destructive in the state's history, scorching tens of thousands of acres across South Georgia, destroying more than 120 homes and prompting a state of emergency in 91 counties. Following weeks of drought, high winds and dangerous conditions, the two largest blazes — the Highway 82 Fire in Brantley County and the Pineland Road Fire in Clinch and Echols counties — burned a combined 50,000 acres.

Also worth noting: Georgia has been a testing ground for the impact that tort reform could have on rising insurance costs. Georgia lawmakers and Gov. Brian Kemp pushed through one of the state's largest tort reform efforts in decades during the 2025 legislative session, arguing that excessive lawsuits and large jury verdicts were driving up insurance costs for businesses and consumers. The reform package, signed into law in April 2025, included measures limiting certain premises liability claims, restricting "phantom damages" in medical cost calculations, tightening rules around lawsuit dismissals, and increasing transparency around third-party litigation funding.

Crowded field

Five Democrats are now challenging Republican incumbent John King for Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner. Several of the challengers' platforms are rooted in arguments around insurance affordability, consumer protection and carrier oversight.

In the run-up to the Peach State's Democratic primary on Tues., May 19, 2026, this episode of Insurance Speak features a conversation with AJ Jain, one of the candidates for Georgia Insurance Commissioner. Jain says, "the system is rigged against Georgia families."
