At the start of 2025, issues such as cybersecurity, automated process management (or AI), hard market conditions, and legal system abuse loomed large for property and casualty insurance professionals.

As the year now begins to wind down, these issues continue to frame the insurance-business landscape along with staffing and client financial concerns, according to the results of the 2025 Independent Insurance Agent Survey mounted by PropertyCasualty360 in partnership with the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents and support this year from Steadily.

This article marks the first in a four-part series around the 2025 survey results with coverage culminating in a free webcast in December where insurance journalists will compare notes with PIA National leadership regarding how well the survey results reflect the everyday experiences of today's insurance professionals.

The slideshow above illustrates the demographic makeup of respondents to the 2025 Independent Insurance Agent Survey. Although well over 700 people entered the survey, only those respondents who indicated they work for an independent insurance agency were counted in the final results, making this data a pure representation of how today's agencies are faring.

When comparing 2024 survey results to responses in 2025:

  • Fewer insurance professionals have been in the industry for more than 20 years: 76% in 2024 versus 63% in 2025.
  • Slightly more of them have been in the industry for less than a decade: About 8% in 2024 versus 15% in 2025.
  • The 2025 survey saw many more agency employees and producers respond versus agency owners.
  • As it was in 2024, the largest number of survey respondents were age 60 or older.
  • There was a notable jump this year in the number of female respondents: 31% in 2024 versus 45% in 2025.
  • This was the first year we asked respondents to indicate which part of the U.S. they live and work in. The East had the most respondents at 35%, and the South had the fewest at 15%.

Today's presentation also gets into the nature of insurance-agency business in 2025, how agencies are structured, and the health of their profit margins.
