“If everybody had an ocean… Across the U.S.A. Then everybody’d be surfin’… Like Californ-i-a…”

The Beach Boys memorialized the West Coast’s blue skies, sandy beaches and glistening ocean vistas in the group's 1963 classic “Surfin’ USA.” Pacific Palisades was one of several Southern California surfing spots mentioned in the song.

The median home price there now is between $3.4 billion and $4.6 million, Zillow reports.

The Palisades Fire has reduced much of the affluent community — including the homes of beloved celebrities — to charred rubble. The wildfire grew to more than 17,000 acres and burned more than 1,200 structures as of Jan. 8, 2025.

At least five people have died and more than 100,000 residents have been evacuated to escape several dangerous Southern California wildfires kicked up by blusterous Santa Ana winds, Bloomberg reports.

The Palisades Fire is at 0% containment, according to CalFire.

AccuWeather forecasts the Los Angeles County fires could result in as much as $57 billion in damages, making the event among the costliest catastrophes in U.S. history. The historic Eames House, the Getty Villa, Will Rogers’ home, Topanga Ranch Motel, the Los Angeles Arboretum and Botanic Garden, and the Hollywood Bowl are among the famous sites either destroyed or threatened by wildfire, according the the LA Times and other media outlets.
