For most people, insurance is a background app, running behind the scenes unnoticed. That is until an issue arises, such as a claim, premium increase or nonrenewal notice, moving insurance coverage to the forefront of the now-disgruntled policyholder's mind. Issues with claims handling continue to drive most complaints, Wolters Kluwer found. However, this is hardly a new phenomenon as a 2020 ValuePenguin.com study found 68% of complaints against insurance companies involve allegations of mishandling a claim. Complaints about the underwriting process were the second most common complaint against insurance companies, according to Wolters Kluwer. "Managing compliance risk is a significant concern for insurers," Steven Meirink, executive vice president and general manager for Wolters Kluwer Compliance Solutions, said in a release. "However, monitoring the changing regulatory requirements and the enforcement action environment using a compliance program management approach can be instrumental in fostering insurers' market conduct compliance."
