Nearly any business with a retail component needs inland marine insurance, which protects against losses when goods are transported over land via truck or train. This type of coverage is especially prudent when the goods in question are high-dollar, according to the Insurance Information Institute, because such products often are not covered by standard commercial insurance or business owners insurance. Some of the things that tend to carry inland marine insurance include:
- Computers and computing components;
- Communications equipment;
- Construction and contracting equipment;
- Medical and scientific equipment;
- Photography equipment; and
- Fine art.
Inland marine insurance policies also are devised to cover the storage of such goods during transportation. But it takes an experienced insurance professional to evaluate each commercial enterprise and determine exactly what coverages are needed. The slideshow above highlights 2021's top inland marine insurance carriers based on net premiums written, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
