Teen drivers don't just need auto insurance when they get their first license. Experts say teen drivers may also need insurance when they secure their learner's permit. But as a recent Forbes Advisor article points out, parents have good reason to be hesitant about taking this step with their teens. Besides the fact that teen drivers are expensive to insure, they're also prone to accidents, and many of them are deadly accidents. Motor vehicle crashes are the second leading cause of death among teens, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And in 2019, drivers between the ages of 15 and 20 accounted for nearly 8% of all fatal accidents, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports. The good news: There are steps teens and their parents can take to increase the chance that youngsters remain safe once they start driving, and these same steps also can help lower their car insurance rates. As with any major purchase, it helps to do a little homework about what you're buying and whether or not it's the best deal available.
