Areas of the South have been left in shambles after a string of tornadoes and severe storms caused widespread damage across multiple states over the past few days. On Sunday, May 2, at least three tornadoes touched down in the Mississippi cities of Tupelo, Calhoun City and Yazoo City, damaging trees and power lines, The Weather Channel reported. Calhoun County Sheriff Greg Pollan said in a Facebook post that "the town of Calhoun City was hit hard tonight. Light poles have been snapped off. Trees in a few homes. Trees on vehicles. Damage to several businesses. Fortunately, we have had no reports at this time of injuries." Georgia experienced at least two tornadoes on the morning of May 3rd, resulting in two deaths in Houston and Douglas counties. Both fatalities were caused by falling trees, according to CNN. One resident in Tennessee also was killed by a falling tree during a thunderstorm on Tuesday. According to CoreLogic, this recent above-normal tornado activity can, in part, be attributed to La Niña conditions of cooler-than-normal sea temperatures in the central Pacific Ocean this past winter and spring.
