Insurer W. R. Berkley Corp., Greenwich, Conn., said it has named Sandra C. Nelson president of its Monitor Liability Managers, LLC commercial unit.

A company spokeswoman said that Ms. Nelson replaces Doug Powers, who will continue with the company in another capacity. Both he and Ms. Nelson founded Monitor Liability 18 years ago and have worked closely together throughout the years, the spokeswoman added.

The appointment is effective immediately.

Monitor Liability is an underwriting management company specializing in professional and executive liability insurance. Monitor distributes its products to the marketplace through appointed and licensed independent agents and brokers on a nationwide basis with a focus on small to middle market companies.

Ms. Nelson most recently served as Monitor's executive vice president and has been with Monitor since its founding in 1992.

W. R. Berkley operates in five segments of the property and casualty insurance business in the United States: specialty insurance, regional property and casualty insurance, alternative markets, reinsurance, and international.
