Drivers that take a state-approved defensive driving course can usually save a few dollars on their auto insurance premiums.

The voluntary courses, which train drivers on hazard recognition and collision avoidance, can usually knock 5% to 10% off participants' auto rates.

The average monthly auto insurance premium in the United States is between $190 and $225 per month for full coverage. A 10% discount would save drivers between $228 and $270 a year.
Courses are typically four to six hours and cost around $25 to $50 to enroll.

Discounts vary widely by provider, and some only offer them to drivers over the age of 50, so drivers should check with their insurer before signing up for a course. Drivers should ask about the amount of the discount, if there are age requirements involved and whether the insurer accepts certificates from the course the driver is planning to use.
