Cyber breaches are rising and they're becoming more expensive, according to data from IBM.

In 2025, the average cost of a data breach in the United States reached a record high of $10.22 million, and the global average cost of a data breach was $4.44 million.

Cyber criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated and using AI to detect and exploit vulnerabilities. Instead of targeting a single company, they are targeting entire supply chains, breaching organizations through their suppliers' vulnerabilities.

The healthcare industry saw the highest cost for breaches, averaging $7.42 million per incident. Finance industries saw the second highest costs per incident. In the United States, costs associated with data breaches are often higher due to subsequent litigation involving those affected by the breach.

While AI is helping criminals, it's also helping organizations fend off attacks. Companies that used extensive AI and automation for security reduced their breach lifecycle and saved an average of $1.9 million.

The slideshow above highlights additional ways organizations can increase their cyber hygiene according to Gallagher Re.
