A partnership between USAA and United Through Reading will provide 10,000 literacy kits for children of military families. The organizations will also host several employee engagement events in April in recognition of the Month of the Military Child.
The Month of the Military Child is an annual observation that celebrates the resilience and sacrifice of military-connected children. There are approximately 1.4 million of these children worldwide.
"For more than a century, USAA employees have been dedicated to serving military families on both their professional and personal time. Over the past decade, our USAA Serves campaign has empowered employees to show up for the military community in moments that matter," Susan MacCabe, head of civic engagement and belonging at USAA, said in a release. "As we celebrate this milestone, there is no better way to honor that legacy than by providing 10,000 literacy kits and recorded stories to help military children find a sense of home and continuity, no matter where they are stationed."
United Through Reading is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening military families by fostering connection through shared story time. Throughout April, USAA and UTR will assemble and distribute the literacy kits, which each include a children's book, stickers, bookmarks and handwritten messages of encouragement.
The kits will be distributed at Month of the Military Child community events across several cities, including Kileen and Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida.
In addition to these events, USAA will host four storytime recording sessions featuring UTR's Mobile Story Station, which will offer USAA employees the chance to record stories to create a digital library for military children around the world. These recording events will be held at the USAA headquarters in San Antonio, as well as at the insurer's campuses in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Chesapeake, Virginia.
"We're deeply grateful to USAA for partnering with us on this impactful employee engagement series," Carrie Valentine Fuller, CEO of United Through Reading, said in a release. "Providing 10,000 literacy kits to military families during this special month is incredibly meaningful. And having employees take the time to record stories for children around the globe makes an even greater impact. We truly appreciate USAA's generosity."
