Colorado fire
The American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA) has launched My Resilient Home, a new website aimed at helping homeowners with wildfire mitigation.
The site offers practical steps homeowners can take to strengthen their homes against wildfire and reduce related insurance losses. It includes interactive tools that help homeowners determine where they could improve their home's resilience and create an action plan.
The guidance uses the latest wildfire science and includes tips for both fire resistant homes and resilient landscaping.
"Homeowners are looking for trustworthy, accessible guidance on how to make their properties more resilient," said Karen Collins, APCIA vice president, property & environmental, in a statement. "My Resilient Home delivers exactly that — clear, practical steps families can take to live with wildfire risk while helping protect their home, their community, and their financial security."
In North America, wildfire insured losses are growing at an annual rate of 14%, according to Swiss Re. Last year's LA wildfires saw record-breaking combined insured losses of roughly $40 billion.
Higher temperatures and changes in precipitation pattens, along with lengthening fire seasons, are also boosting risk.
In Colorado, a new law has incentivized home hardening efforts by offering insurance rate reductions for homeowners who have taken mitigation steps.
"By taking small, meaningful actions — like clearing defensible space, replacing wood fences with metal and hardening roofs and vents — homeowners can dramatically improve their home's ability to withstand ignition from wildfire," Collins said. "My Resilient Home is built to make these steps straightforward, accessible, and achievable for every family."
The My Resilient Home website will eventually expand to include more natural hazards and additional regions, APCIA said.
