A nor'easter is pounding the East Coast with heavy snow and high winds, causing travel disruptions and power outages for many states.
The powerful bomb cyclone started yesterday and will continue throughout Monday, producing blizzard conditions from Delaware through southern New England. Philadelphia and New York are expected to see a foot or more of snow, while parts of the Jersey Shore, Long Island and southeastern Massachusetts could see two feet or more, according to AccuWeather.
As of 7 am ET, unofficial snowfall reports had 12 to 18 inches around the New York City area, 10 to 18 inches in Philadelphia and 15 to 20 inches in Long Island.
Blizzard warnings are in effect for 41 million people, and more than 350,000 utility customers were without power as of Monday morning.
Travel was impacted yesterday and today and will likely cause additional delays as crews work to clean up after the storm. On Sunday, airports saw 7,500 flight delays and 3,400 cancellations. As of Monday morning, 5,300 flights have already been cancelled and 700 delayed.
Travel restrictions are in effect for many parts of the East Coast, with officials asking residents to stay home so crews can work to plow streets.
"Travel will grind to a halt across much of the Northeast," said Jonathan Porter, AccuWeather's chief meteorologist, in a statement. "Thousands of flights are being cancelled at major hubs in the Northeast, with impacts cascading across the country. Rail and bus service will be suspended. Many roads and even major highways may be impassable for hours."
