With nearly 400,000 insurance professionals set to retire over the next few years, the industry is facing a potential talent crisis. To attract new insurance professionals, the Massachusetts Association of Insurance Agents (MAIA) recently launched its Insurance Pathway Program, which provides a comprehensive pathway to personal lines insurance careers for individuals who are new to the industry.

The six-month program is scholarship-funded, with all participants receiving full tuition coverage and one attempt at a state licensing exam. Participants will also receive foundational agency training and ongoing support as their career advances, as well as connections to members of the Massachusetts Association of Insurance Agents.

The program will blend MAIA's New Agent Training – Personal Lines curriculum with P&C licensing preparation, agency operations fundamentals and career development guidance. This includes meet-and-greets with agency owners, job shadowing and day-in-the-life experiences.

The Insurance Career Pathway program's courses include:

  • Insurance basics
  • Homeowners' coverage
  • Condo and HO endorsements
  • HO coaching
  • Massachusetts personal auto
  • Massachusetts auto coaching
  • Auto endorsements and personal umbrella
  • Intro to RMV
  • Operational training and AMS basics
  • Property and casualty licensing

To be eligible for the program, insurance career hopefuls must be 18 or older, residents of Massachusetts, not currently employed in the independent insurance industry, capable of completing the six-month program and meet the standards required to take the P&C licensing exam.

While the program's estimated $2,000 value is covered by scholarships, participants are responsible for a $150 participant commitment fee, which will be refunded after successful completion of the program. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, MAIA says, with selected applicants invited to an interview before they are accepted to the program.
