On Feb. 12, President Donald Trump rolled back the scientific finding that climate change is a danger to human health and the environment.
The move ends the federal government's authority to control pollution, which is warming the planet. It means limits could be removed on carbon dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases responsible for amplifying drought, wildfire and other natural catastrophes.
President Trump said the finding was a "radical rule" that powered a "Green New Scam." The Trump administration says the move will save auto manufacturers and other businesses $1 trillion, though no data has been provided to support that figure.
It's just the latest blow to U.S. climate change initiatives in the last year. The Trump administration's federal funding and staffing cuts have hit major science agencies responsible for important climate and weather research. Some agencies, like the National Center for Atmospheric Research, have been targeted for potential shuttering.
The slideshow above highlights four nonprofits that have stepped up to try to fill the research gaps left by climate change cuts.
