There are now 7.9 million mobile homes in the United States, representing about 5.4% of the U.S. housing stock, according to Storage Cafe.
Popularity of mobile homes can be even higher, depending on the region. States like Florida now have more than 824,400 mobile home units, and mobile homes make up 15% of all the homes in New Mexico.
Texas has seen its manufactured housing presence grow by 9% over the last two decades, while Louisiana's is up 8%.
Americans are opting for manufactured homes because of their affordability. In 2024, the average price for a manufactured home was $123,300, compared to a median home price of $426,900 nationally.
However, insuring a manufactured home can present challenges. Manufactured homes can be more susceptible to wind and hail damage. Some consumer advocates say they sometimes face higher premiums because they're perceived as being located in poor or crime-ridden ZIP codes, even though most are now located in resort-style communities.
Many of the most popular states for manufactured homes are in the Sunbelt, where insurance premiums are already higher due to weather risks. Home insurance premiums in Florida, for example, average around $5,000 annually, compared to a national average of about $2,100 annually.
Fewer national insurers will cover manufactured homes, and less competition can mean higher prices for homeowners.
Owners of manufactured homes can work to bring their insurance premiums down by installing safety systems and improving the structure's wind and storm resistance — for example, by adding storm shutters.
