Sitting in traffic costs money, according to a recent study by WalletHub.
With an average of 49 hours spent sitting in traffic, the data showed congestion cost the average driver $894 in 2025.
"Owning a car can really squeeze your wallet if you're not in the right location," said WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo.
"On top of having pricey gas, maintenance and insurance expenses, some states can hurt you even more financially with excessive traffic congestion, which wastes both your fuel and your productivity." He added. "The best states to drive in are ones that are relatively rural, with smaller populations, a low cost of living, well-maintained roads and safe motorists."
Meanwhile, despite most people having good opinions of their own driving abilities, over three-quarters admit to behaviors that are outright dangerous.
The majority of auto accidents are caused by human error, with speeding, drunk driving, driving while fatigued or intoxicated and not wearing a seatbelt all classified as human error. At the same time, distracted driving like using a phone behind the wheel could also increase the likelihood of a crash.
Data compiled by the World Health Organization shows drivers using mobile phones are four times more likely to be in a car crash.
"When it comes to car insurance, there's a difference between 'being at fault' for an honest accident, and illegal, reckless driving or activities, and this could include using your phone in your hand to text and message people," said Adrian Taylor, executive general manager at Compare the Market AU.
"Using your phone for hands-free navigation or phone calls is ok, but it's imperative that drivers avoid any illegal use of the phone," he added. "It's distracting and dangerous, and could leave you footing the bill yourself if your insurer refuses to pay because you knowingly did the wrong thing."
