Winter months are some of the busiest for insurers, as claims tend to spike around the holidays and as the weather cools.

If you need to file a claim this holiday season, the following tips can help things go smoothly:

  • Check your coverage. Review your insurance policy to see whether your claim is covered and whether it makes more sense to file a claim or pay for repairs out of pocket.
  • Document. Keep all your receipts from hotel stays or temporary repairs, in case those items are covered by your insurance. It also helps to keep a record of everything you do with local authorities, your insurer and contractors in case you need to correct any mistakes on the insurer’s end.
  • Be patient. There might be longer wait times when working with insurers due to a higher volume of claims being processed.
