The first winter weather event of the season will happen this weekend and early next week across large parts of the Midwest and Northeast, according to AccuWeather.

An Alberta Clipper storm from Canada will spread snow from South Dakota to Michigan starting Saturday and bring a surge of cold air to the Midwest, Plains and Mississippi Valley early next week.

Temperatures in affected areas will run 10 to 25 degrees below historic averages. Parts of the Midwest and Northeast will see single digit temperatures for the first time this winter.

The surge of cold air will bring a hard freeze to a lot of areas, especially in the Southeast, that are still in growing season. Crops and outdoor infrastructure will likely be impacted if not protected.

Sunday night into Tuesday, snow will develop in northwestern Indiana and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Localized snow squalls could impact Ohio, Pennsylvania, western and central New York and northern West Virginia.

Flights could be disrupted due to the storm, adding to government shutdown-related cancellations.
