Halloween can bring out ghosts, goblins — and insurance claims.

Holiday risks range from tripping on costumes in the dark to decoration-related house fires. Theft and vandalism often rise around Halloween too.

Policyholders can help protect themselves from unexpected claims by taking a few preventative steps:

  • Make sure home walkways, porches and stairs are well-lit and clear of tripping hazards.
  • Install decorations safely. Avoid overloaded circuits, exposed cords and decorations near open flames.
  • Lock up any valuables in the car and park in well-lit spaces. At home, leave lights on while away.
  • Keep pets contained or in a separate space so they don’t react poorly to trick-or-treaters or party-goers.
  • Slow down when driving through residential areas and watch out for costumed kids.
The slideshow above highlights some of the most common insurance claims made around Halloween.
