BMW is recalling nearly 200,000 vehicles due to risk of fire while parked or being driven, according to a notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Due to the fire risk, owners of the recalled vehicles are being asked to park outside and away from buildings and other vehicles until they get their vehicle fixed.

The hazard stems from the engine starter relay in some models. The relay may corrode, causing it to overheat and short circuit, which can start a fire.

BMW is conducting a phased recall of the vehicles due to parts availability. Initial notification letters will be sent to owners on Nov. 14, and a second notice will be sent once replacement parts are available.

Vehicle identification numbers for recalled vehicles will be searchable on NHTSA.gov/recalls on Nov. 14. Owners can enter their VIN or license plate number to see if their vehicle is under recall.

The recalled BMW models are:
•            2019-2022 Z4
•            2019-2021 330I
•            2020-2022 X3
•            2020-2022 X4
•            2020-2022 530I
•            2021-2022 430I standard and convertible
•            2022 230I
