The rapid growth of e-commerce has revolutionized the way businesses operate, but it has also led to an increase in package theft. Both incoming and outgoing packages are being targeted, and small business owners are suffering the consequences.
Data shows that one in three small businesses have lost at least one package to theft in the last year. While around 56% of these businesses have bumped up their security measures or increased their shipping insurance in response to this, 41% say these thefts have led to delayed orders and customer complaints. These losses don’t just hit small businesses financially, but can also erode the trust and reputation they have with customers.
The average loss per stolen package is around $192, ChamberofCommerce.org reports, and only 23% of stolen packages are ever recovered.
These issues are particularly concerning as the holiday season approaches and shipping volumes surge. Historically, package theft incidents increase by nearly 60% during November and December, which can be a big hit to businesses that are trying to capitalize on holiday sales.
As package pirates become bolder, it is more important than ever for business owners to take proactive steps to protect their shipments and preserve customer trust. In the slideshow above, we feature seven practical tips from ChamberofCommerce.org to help business owners keep their shipments safe and reduce theft losses.
