Vehicle theft in the United States dropped 17% in 2024 compared to 2023.
Last year, 850,708 cars were stolen — well below the 1.02 million vehicles stolen in 2023.
Several states saw large declines in vehicle theft. Washington was down 32%, and Nebraska saw a 31% decline. Nevada (30% decline), Oregon (29%) and Colorado (26%) also saw notable drops in car thefts.
However, drivers still need to be cautious. Drivers that own vulnerable vehicles should be especially vigilant. The most frequently stolen vehicles last year were the Hyundai Sonata and Elantra; Kia Soul, Sportage and Forte; Chevrolet pick-up trucks; Jeep Grand Cherokee; Dodge Charger; and the Honda Accord and Civic.
Collision coverage alone won’t cover a vehicle in the case of theft. Policyholders need to have comprehensive auto coverage for insurance to help.
Comprehensive coverage can pay for a stolen vehicle if it isn’t recovered. If the vehicle is recovered, it can help pay for any damage that was caused.
Comprehensive coverage won’t cover any personal property that was in the vehicle, like laptops, tools or other valuables. Policyholders can likely get coverage for those items through their homeowners policy, though.
